The largest marine predator on the planet

Sea predators. Most large marine life.

American scientists have found that the largest marine predator in the history of the Earth was a giant sperm whale that lived in the oceans 12-13 million years ago and hunted other whales.

The discovery Oliver Lambert from the Royal Belgian Institute of natural Sciences in Brussels, and Giovanni Bianucci from the University of Pisa in Italy found fragments of fossilized jaw of a whale in geological formations in the Peruvian desert in ICA, already known to many paleontologists, their artifacts.

The researchers called their newly described species is the sperm whale Leviathan melvillei in honour of Herman Melville, the author of the book about sea monster – the whale Moby dick.

According to the reconstruction carried out by scientists, the giant was a jaw length of three meters and its length from snout to tail 16-18 meters.

The most amazing feature of this unusual animal has huge teeth length 30 inches and width 12 inches. These are the largest teeth possessed by any of earth’s wild animals.

The authors of the study say that their teeth located in both upper and lower jaws, the sea monster used to hunt other whales, the size of modern baleen or baleen whales, had a length of about 10 meters.

Newly discovered predator of the sea exceeded in size the body and teeth of even the most ferocious representative of predatory fish, the famous Megalodon (Carcharocles megalodon) is an extinct giant shark, which has 1.5 million years ago was the terror of the inhabitants of the seas.

Despite the fact that the remains of Megalodon and Leviathan melvillei were discovered in the same geologic formation, paleontologists believe that competition between these two giants is hardly passed in the acute phase for both species to fight for the prey it was deadly. Most likely, they could hunt the young of each other.

From modern predators matched in size to the Leviathan melvillei can only sperm whales, reaching 20 meters in length, however, these sea giants are armed with comparatively small teeth, which grow only on the lower jaw and are used exclusively for hunting shellfish and less fish.

In addition to describing new species of whales, scientists have proposed a new vision and purpose of the mysterious spermaceti organ of the sperm whale – the giant bubble of a viscous fluid called spermaceti . located in the head of a whale. In earlier times, this liquid was the main trophy whalers.

Until now it was thought that the spermaceti organ helps the whale to dive to great depths. In the case of Leviathan melvillei it was not necessary, as the main prey of this monster – small baleen whales live at the surface. According to Lambert and Bianucci spermaceti organ of the Leviathan melvillei was used as a battering RAM, with which it was possible to stun a victim or to challenge the right of the female in the competition with a congener.
